144 SPANISH I 1 CREDIT
In SPANISH I, emphasis is placed on learning to understand and speak the language correctly, rather than on abstract grammatical construction. However, the study of grammar is included as being basic to the speaking of the language. The amount of Spanish spoken in class depends on the ability of each class. Oral repetition drills are used to improve the spoken language. Basic sentence construction is stressed also- especially word order and subject/verb and noun/adjective agreement. Although speaking and understanding are stressed, reading and writing is also practiced. The geography of Mexico, Central America and Spain and the celebration of Spanish holidays are also studied.
244 SPANISH II 1 CREDIT
SPANISH II is a continuation of work accomplished in the first year course. The purpose is to improve the speaking and listening abilities of the students and a completion of most of the grammar of the language. At the second year level, there is also stress on the reading and writing of the language. The same methods employed in the first year Spanish course are used to improve all language skills. Culture study emphasizes history, but extends into many other areas, including the civilization of the Spanish-speaking world.
344 SPANISH III 1 CREDIT
The goal of SPANISH III is that the students have the ability to communicate in Spanish speaking, reading, writing, and understanding the spoken language. First, there is an extensive review of the grammar studied during the first two years. The student's vocabulary and proficiency in speaking the language is increased by conversation in class. The short story is used to introduce the student to Spanish and Spanish-American literature. The literature studied can meet the desires and the needs of the students. The third level is flexible in its content in order to allow the students to be creative in their own way. The students have the opportunity to choose people, events, or literature and study that topic in detail.
444 SPANISH IV 1 CREDIT (may or may not be offered)
SPANISH IV is an independent reading program. The student reads plays, novels and nonfiction works in Spanish and then answers comprehension questions, writes in Spanish about the work and speaks with the teacher about the work in Spanish.
147 FRENCH I 1 CREDIT
FRENCH I introduces the student to basic comprehension, speaking, reading and writing of the French language. It also presents some of the customs and culture of the various French speaking countries. Success in the classroom and on the grammar and vocabulary tests will require a large amount of memory work and practice. Recommended for college-bound students.
247 FRENCH II 1 CREDIT
FRENCH II reviews the material covered in French I and increases comprehension, speaking, reading and writing ability This allows the student to develop a clear picture of life in French speaking countries and gives students more practice in approximating the proficiency of a native speaker.
347 FRENCH III 1 CREDIT
FRENCH III places a major emphasis on developing speaking and reading abilities. Other areas covered include writing, grammar review, and cultural and general knowledge of the countries where French is spoken.
447 FRENCH LITERATURE 1 CREDIT (may or may not be offered)
FRENCH LITERATURE will give an introduction to French Literature through the exploration of a wide variety of literary masterpieces, both old and new. Students will develop good reading skills using excerpts as well as complete works by French writers. These include the short story, drama, poetry, novel, etc. By the end of the year students will be familiar with several major French writers and be able to discuss the main themes in their works. Instruction, readings, and discussions will be conducted in English. PRE-REQUISITE : Two or more credits in College Prep English.
This course will be an elective for anyone who has not had or is not currently taking French III. A French credit will be given to those who have already taken or who are currently taking French III.
