198 RELIGION 9 1 CREDIT

HEBREW SCRIPTURES 1ST SEMESTER: Taken during the first semester, this part of the course will introduce students to the Old Testament and help them mine its riches. As they gain confidence in studying the Hebrew Scriptures, the students will discover how these writings can help them live a life faithful to God's promises. Students will be introduced to the great themes in the Old Testament.

PRINCIPLES OF ROMAN CATHOLICISM 2ND SEMESTER: This course provides an integrated survey of the basic doctrinal beliefs, communal worship, and moral principles of Roman Catholicism - all presented with a sensitivity to the unique developmental needs of adolescents.

NEW TESTAMENT 1ST SEMESTER. A study of the New Testament of the Bible that helps students to know and understand the person, the message, the mission of Jesus and the basic teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Students will be able to identify the books of the New Testament, find individual quotations, and to use a cross-reference. It will also bring Scripture into the lives of the students so they can apply its messages to their own lives.

SOCIAL JUSTICE 3RD QUARTER: This course expresses the mission of Jesus by translating the proclamation of the scriptures into action. The main concept of the social teaching of the Church is the dignity of the person. This course calls forth a Christian response to the injustices of today's world.

DEATH AND DYING 4TH QUARTER: This course discusses ways of shaping our death through the way we live. The rituals surrounding dying and death are explained so that the students will be prepared to cope with the inevitability of their own death and that of those who are close to them.

LITURGY, PRAYER, SACRAMENTS 1ST SEMESTER: Liturgy, Prayer, and Sacraments is a one-semester course that takes an in-depth look at the Mass, the seven sacraments, and Various prayer forms. This course includes a study of ritual and a historical overview of the development of each sacrament and the changes in the Mass. Less detailed topics include the Church Year, church environment and art, and liturgical ministries. Prayer forms include contemplation, meditation, spiritual reading, the Jesus Prayer, traditional prayers, and Liturgy of the Hours. The purpose of the course is to help students become more involved in liturgy, grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ, and see the sacraments as ritual moments in living the life of Christ on a daily basis.

CHRISTIAN MORALITY 2ND SEMESTER: Christian Morality attempts to let students answer the question, "Who am I becoming in Christ?" The course is based on the Gospel (especially the Beatitudes), the Ten Commandments. the teachings of the Church, the moral virtues, and studies on conscience development. It explores the process of moral decision making, conscience formation, and methods of self-improvement in a context of true-to-life issues such as addiction. fear, violence. abuse, and medical ethics. The aim of the course is to make students whole--not perfect.

CHRISTIAN SERVICE - WEEKLY: Christian Service is an integral part of religion classes since the religion curriculum has three main areas of concern: knowledge, service, and prayer. Service involves spending religion class one day a week in one of the following ways: tutoring in the elementary school, helping with the pre-schoolers, assisting teachers, visiting residents in nursing homes or shut-ins, and helping with routine tasks in the school building or starch building. Students may choose to perform their service on weekends off the property such as church involvement at Sunday Masses or assisting in a hospital or soup kitchen. In this case, students have study time during the religion period. Students are evaluated by observation and a service journal, which includes a listing of other services performed throughout the week at home, school, or place of employment. ~The purpose of the course is to show students that service is an integral part of living one's faith.

CHURCH HISTORY FIRST SEMESTER. Church history explores the growth and development of the Catholic Church from Pentecost to the Present. Students will also be required to participate in a Parish Experience Program. This program gives direct exposure to the ongoing ministry of St. John's via participation in the many teams, committees and ministries of the parish. Course work includes perspectives on church history, the work of Vatican Council II and the history of St. Johns.

LIFESTYLES-SECOND SEMESTER. Lifestyles include a study of life themes of a Christian-identity, autonomy, love, communication, sexuality. lifelong learning, work, money, leisure--as related to the vocational responses of single, married or religious life
